Everybody is looking for the one, giant source of traffic. The killer secret PPC keyword. Or the one organic keyword that ranks Google page 1, position 1.
In most cases, though, you’re looking at creating lots of traffic from many different smaller sources. Sorry, Charlie.
So, you’re dreaming of this:
Source / # of Clicks
One insanely highly placed keyword in Google = 1,000
TOTAL = 1,000
Does this happen? Yes, it can. Someone has to rank #1 for those big-ticket keywords, right. But in reality, it usually looks something like this:
Source / # of Clicks
Long-tail keyword in Google = 10
Another long-tail keyword in Google = 13
Direct links from an Ezine article = 44
One high-level keyword in Yahoo! = 26
PPC ads = 67
Ezine Articles clickthroughs = 14
Facebook profile clickthroughs = 10
Forum signatures = 7
Etc., etc.
TOTAL = 1,000
Where do you get all of these traffic sources? We have alluded to some of them above. Here are suggestions:
Okay, not really – but look at these examples. Every example is on a per day basis:
EXAMPLE A: Great Conversion Rate; Low Traffic
Product Profit Margin: $20.00
Traffic: 100 clicks
Conversion Rate: 5%
Your Daily Profit: $100.00
EXAMPLE B: Lousy, Rock-Bottom Conversion Rate; High Traffic
Product Profit Margin: $20.00
Traffic: 10,000 clicks
Conversion Rate: 1%
Your Daily Profit: $2,000.00
Which would you rather have, $100 per day or $2,000 per day?
You might say: Well, that’s not reality. You can just as easily make money with low traffic, as long as you have good, motivated, and qualified buyers.
As long as you can gut out more traffic like a piledriver, you can always make more money. That’s one of the oldest and most solid dictums of Internet Marketing. The Web abounds with stories of guys who have lousy conversion rates, guys who don’t give a damn about page layout and other selling considerations, but simply because of the fact that they pull in thousands and thousands of clicks a day, they make money.
