Why aren’t more Internet Marketers using Google Image Search to generate traffic?

I had a page that was mysteriously getting a lot of traffic.

I couldn’t figure it out.

Then, I ran through my Google Analytics and saw that one of the images from that page was ranking high for a certain pornographic-related keyword.

Searchers go straight to Google Image Search.  They turn off Safe Search.  They search for images of certain things. They get pictures of those things.

Getting traffic from Google Image Search is more a matter of maintaining SEO standards than anything.

In other words, we are all so conditioned to pay attention to the on-page, text-based SEO that we often toss to the side anything related to images.

What you need to do is properly deal with image SEO, such as:

  • Alt text for every image.
  • Captions for every image.
  • Tags for every image.
  • Proper keywords for all of the above (i.e., not “joe’s pic of stuff” but “free bodybuilding tips”).

Hot Linking Gives You Better Rank and Traffic, Too

Don’t forget that a lot of people searching Google Image Search want to “appropriate” your images.  Got a problem with that?  I hope not, because it’s gonna happen.

But this is a blessing in disguise.  Basically, if you want to steal an image from Image Search, you can do any of 3 things:

  1. The “Legit” Way – Click on the image; click on “See Full Size Image”; right-click on the image; save picture to your desktop.
  2. The Vista Snipping Tool Way – Same as above, except use the Vista Snipping Tool to make a screenshot of the image instead of the final right-click step.  This is cleaner than the above step.
  3. Hot-Linking – The lazy way.  Link to the picture using the full url.  It will look something like http://www.StupidSiteBlahBlah/images/stupidimage.jpg

When users “steal” your image using the hot-linking method, they are giving you backlinks.
