Little fish in a big pond? Or big fish in a small pond?
Trying to rank in Google Search for a big-time keyword is a recipe for frustration. But did you know that you can rank high–really high–in smaller venues for the same keyword?
No, we’re not talking other search engines like Yahoo!, Ask, etc. We’re talking YouTube.
Everyone wants to rank for web hosting reviews. That’s because affiliate payouts for hosting are high. The problem is that you have so much competition, you don’t stand a chance of ranking search for hosting keywords.
My HostGator review page ranks nowhere in Google for “hostgator review.”

But I produced a video review of HostGator that took little more time than to write a review. This video review ranks #1 for the same search term in YouTube.
Is YouTube the absolute go-to place for HostGator reviews? Of course not. But it does get decent traffic, and the ranking hasn’t moved in ages.
Not only that, but I get lots of positive comments from viewers. In YouTube, that bastion of flame-fests, can you imagine getting a positive comment ever?

Since Google owns YouTube, you need to apply your “Google mindset” to YouTube. So, forget spamming.
In the same way that Google likes home-brewed, authentic stuff, YouTube likes the same thing. Google likes dialogue and conversation. So, when someone comments on my video, I comment back. When someone spam-comments, I delete it. I keep the comment section clean.
Updating, too. Now that YouTube has these great annotations, you can add text comments and updates in a snap. I don’t know if Google/YouTube gives you “credit” in the same way that they credit you for adding content to your site or blog–but if not, it cannot be far in the future.
Now, that isn’t to say I haven’t ever spammed YouTube.
You can get a short spurt of traffic from YouTube direct clickthroughs by producing one video, and then uploading it multiple times under different keywords.
Does it work? Yes.
How long does it work? About 2 days. After that, the YouTube algo, bots, people, or whoever is behind it all, will knock your video down.
